2016 USA Olympic Men’s Basketball Team Announced

Announced on June 27, the official USA Men’s Olympic basketball team roster was released. The roster features six Olympic and/or FIBA World Cup gold medalists. The 12-man team is looking to collect a third consecutive Olympic title.

Carmelo Anthony (Syracuse/New York Knicks)

Harrison Barnes (North Carolina/Golden State Warriors)

Jimmy Butler (Marquette/Chicago Bulls)

DeMarcus Cousins (Kentucky/Sacramento Kings)

DeMar DeRozan (USC/Toronto Raptors)

Kevin Durant (Texas/Oklahoma City Thunder)

Paul George (Fresno State/Indiana Pacers)

Draymond Green (Michigan State/Golden State Warriors)

Kyrie Irving (Duke/Cleveland Cavaliers)

DeAndre Jordan (Texas A&M/Los Angeles Clippers)

Kyle Lowry (Villanova/Toronto Raptors)

Klay Thompson (Washington State/Golden State Warriors)

 

Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant are the two members of the team who were a part of the 2012 gold medalist USA Olympic Team. The five players who have been members of the USA World Cup gold medalist teams are DeMarcus Cousins (2014), Kevin Durant (2010), Kyrie Irving (2014), DeMar DeRozan (2014), and Klay Thompson (2014). Durant is the first USA male basketball player to be selected for four Olympic teams.

The team’s head coach will be Duke University Hall of Fame mentor Mike Krzyzewski, who has been the head coach of the USA Men’s Basketball team since 2005 and has a 75-1 record. He has also led the USA to a gold medal in 2008 and 2012, as well as gained the 2010 and 2014 FIBA World Cup titles. Jim Boeheim, Syracuse Hall of Fame mentor, as well as the Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau and Monty Williams, will assist him.

As of June 27, the roster was approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors but is still pending the final approval by the United States Olympic Committee. The USA Men’s basketball team has collected a medal in all 17 Olympics that they have competed in. This includes 14 gold medals, one silver, and two bronze.
