High School Sports 4th Annual Martin Luther King Classic: Webster Bank Arena, Bridgeport, CT by Sunil Sunder Raj January 16, 2018 Bridgeport Central(61) vs. Fairfield Ludlowe(51) The opening game of the 4th Annual Martin Luther King Classic between Bridgeport Central Hilltoppers and Fairfield Ludlowe Falcons turned out to be a close contest until the final quarter. The Falcons led 12-11 after the first quarter but the Hilltoppers managed to even the score up at halftime 22-22. In the second half, the game remained tight with Bridgeport Central carrying a 33-29 in the final period. Held to five points in the first three quarters, Hilltoppers senior forward Ra’Quan Riley exploded for 17 points as the lead grew to 15 points. Fairfield Ludlowe responded with a 7-0 run, trimming the deficit down to 50-43 with less than three minutes remaining. Riley converted on a three-point play, bumping the margin back up to eight points with 2:35 left on the clock. Clutch free throw shooting by senior guard Zach William sealed the victory. Senior guard Cooper Nielsen led the Falcons in scoring with 16 points. Career Magnet (New Haven) (69) vs. Harding(Bridgeport) (47) The New Haven Career Magnet Panthers started off on a high note, leading 15-8 after one quarter, only to see the Harding Presidents battle back to tie the game up at 22 heading into the locker room. In the third quarter, the Panthers managed to take a nine-point lead at 38-29 with 3:36 left due to knocking down shots at the free throw line and aggressive defense. Going into the final quarter, Career Magnet led 50-39 and never looked back in a tough and physical game. Jordan Williams poured in a game high 18 points for Career Magnet while Zamir Hairston led Harding in scoring with 10 points. Notre Dame(Fairfield) 68 vs. Xaverian(NY) 57 The Notre Dame Lancers jumped out to an early 14-8 advantage after the first period. However, the Xaverian Clippers responded with a 10-0 run tying the game up at 25-25. Having gone seven minutes without a point, Notre Dame’s first points came on a free throw by Noreaga Davis. The Lancers closed out with an 8-0 run, taking a 33-25 lead at the intermission. In the third quarter, the Lancers caught fire from the free throw line . All courtesy of senior guard Tyler Bourne, who tallied ten of his game-high 21 points as Notre Dame expanded the lead to 50-38 entering the fourth quarter and never lost the double digit lead en route to the 68-57 victory.
