In an emotional video, his family celebrated the defeat of an injury that put his career and even life, at risk. The injuries lead to life-threatening sepsis, where the bodies response to an infection causes injury to tissue and organs. A blood clot eventually formed and doctors were ready to amputate his leg. After 17 surgeries and months on months of rehab, Smith was cleared to continue football activities and has overcome one of the most gruesome injuries in football history.
