Amanda Serrano looking to make boxing history on September 8 in Brooklyn

If you were to ever pick a face of women’s boxing, Amanda Serrano is in the running. The 29 year old has become one of the most decorated fighters in boxing’s history, and she will look to add more gold to her waist come September.

The Brooklyn native will fight Yamila Esther Reynoso on September 8 at the Barclays Center. They will both be fighting for the vacant WBO Junior Welterweight World Championship. Already a champion in five weight classes, a win would make Serrano the only six-division women’s champion. She would also join Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya as the only boxers in general to reach that record.

The card will be headlined by Danny Garcia v. Shawn Porter. Serrano (34-1-1) is on quite a streak, winning her last 20 fights. Her last and only loss came in 2012 against Frida Wallberg. She had the following to say regarding the opportunity:

“I’m super excited to be fighting for a world title in my sixth weight class. My opponent is really a welterweight, having defended her Argentinean 147-pound title by knockout in her last fight, and is dropping down one division to face me. I am coming up four divisions for this shot. I’m sure Reynoso will rehydrate back up to her natural weight after the weigh-in, but this is a risk worth taking. She’s never been stopped either, so I know she’s durable. This is a tremendous card to be a part of with Garcia vs. Porter as the main event. My promoter, Lou DiBella, has big things lined up for me, and I am eager to take on all challenges.”

Reynoso (11-4-3) is looking for her second win in a row. At only 22 years old, she will be making her U.S. debut. With eight wins via KO, Reynoso will have to work on multiple strategies in order to take out a knockout artist in Serrano, who has 26 wins via KO.

Showtime made this announcement after the epic Alicia Napoleon v. Hannah Rankin bout that took place a few weeks ago at the Nassau Coliseum. That fight was not on TV and after the main event, but it was one of the best bouts of the night. While this decision may not have been a direct cause of that, it is a step in the right direction.

There is a catch to all of this, however. The fight will be a part of the undercard coverage on Showtime’s YouTube and Facebook channels at 7 p.m. ET. It is certainly an improvement, considering the history that could be made that night.
