An up to date look at the card for ROH’s Final Battle PPV

The end of the year is a time to reflect on what we have all accomplished. For the pro wrestling world, it is a time to air out their grievances any way they can. Ring of Honor’s Final Battle PPV has an opportunity do to that, and more. Feuds are normally completed during this event, while stars get their moment to shine.

What matches will be taking place you may ask? Here is where the card stands as of today, November 30:

Matt Taven v. Dalton Castle

While it is technically a simple singles match, this means more to Taven than anything else. The leader of The Kingdom was supposed to face former Ring of Honor World Champion Dalton Castle for the title a few months ago. An injured Castle couldn’t compete, and Taven was never given his one-on-one match. Dubbing himself the “real ROH World Champion”, Taven made his own belt and has since brought it to every ROH show he has been to. Now, he will “defend” the belt in a grudge match against Castle.

It is unknown if the rest of The Kingdom or The Boys will be involved in some sort of capacity for this match.

Jonathan Gresham v. Zack Sabre Jr.

This is a simple bout to determine who is the best. Gresham has been on a roll while with Ring of Honor, and everyone knows Sabre Jr. is one of the most technically-skilled wrestlers out there today. In a special ROH v. New Japan bout, who will come out on top?

Bully Ray v. Flip Gordon – “I Quit” match

Flip has become a beloved character in pro wrestling in part because of his role in Being the Elite. He is also one of the most exciting wrestlers out there. Bully Ray has perfected his disgruntled veteran persona to a tee. Flip has become a thorn in his side to the point that Bully just attacks him whenever. The two will settle their differences in an “I Quit” match, a violent match that Bully is known for. Flip won’t give up that easily, however, as he continues to try and break the imaginary glass ceiling.

Christopher Daniels v. Marty Scurll – #1 Contender match for the ROH World Title

“The Villain” received an opportunity at the ROH World Title when he won the Survival of the Fittest tournament not long ago. Daniels is a former ROH Champion and is looking to prove he still belongs in ROH. While it is questionable potentially giving up a title shot, the match has been booked as something of a comeback story for both men. Scurll and Daniels both have claims of being a contender, and fighting to be first in line only makes sense at Final Battle.

Sumie Sakai (c) v. Madison Rayne v. Karen Q v. Kelly Klein – Four Corner Survival match for the WOH World Championship

For over 200 days, Sumie Sakai has held the Women of Honor World Championship. The 47-year-old became the inaugural champion at Supercard of Honor in April, beating fellow match participant Kelly Klein in the finals. Klein, a WOH original who was never given a singles opportunity at the title, will look to rewrite history. Madison Rayne has been on a roll this year, fighting for WWE, ROH, Impact and at All In. She looks to continue her momentum heading into 2019. Karen Q was also in WWE for a split second, participating in the Mae Young Classic.

All four will do everything they can to wow the New York City faithful.

SoCal Uncensored (Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky) (c) v. The Briscoes (Jay and Mark Briscoe) v. The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) – Ladder War for the ROH World Tag Team Championship

This is a match featuring three of the four last holders of the title. SCU defeated The Briscoes at Glory by Honor back in October, ending an over 200-day reign. The Briscoes are looking to increase their company record with their tenth tag team title reign. The Young Bucks will be looking to grab the titles for the fourth time. This could be their last shot at the titles; their contracts are set to expire after New Year’s and it is unknown what they will be doing after.

Contested under Ladder War rules, the seventh in ROH history, expect this bout to be violent with plenty of flips to go around.

Jeff Cobb (c) v. Adam “Hangman” Page – ROH World Television Championship

The winner of this year’s Battle of Los Angeles tournament, Jeff Cobb has been on quite a roll. He defeated Punishment Martinez for the title back in September, but has yet to defend the belt. He has squashed everyone that has gotten in his way, however. “Hangman” Page, one of the breakout stars of the year, will get his chance to possibly win his first ROH singles gold.

Don’t let their sizes fool you, Page and Cobb can move like cruiserweight’s if they wanted to. This has a chance to be a match of the year contender.

Jay Lethal (c) v. Cody Rhodes – ROH World Championship

Back in 2016, Cody debuted for ROH, defeated Lethal via shenanigans. Since then, both have had interesting paths to where they are now. Cody won the ROH World Title and lost it at the last Final Battle PPV to Dalton Castle. He never received an obligated one-on-one rematch.

Lethal became a two-time World Champion when he beat the champion at the time in Castle, along with Rhodes and Matt Taven back in June. Lethal is looking to reclaim his glorious run as a double champion from 2015-2016. The two have a strong history together, sometimes resorting to violence. They renew their rivalry in New York, where it all began. Just like The Young Bucks, Cody is a free agent after New Year’s, making this match one to watch out for.

Final Battle takes place inside the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on December 14. Tickets are sold out.
