I will be providing daily notebooks of bits, nuggets, thoughts, and information throughout PGA Championship Week here at Baltusrol Golf Club in my hometown of Springfield, New Jersey:

Weather.com forecast: After 1.75 inches of rain hit the grounds last night, a somewhat calmer day lies ahead with a high of 94, UV Index 9 of 10, sunset 8:18 p.m., cloudy this morning with sun all afternoon, winds NW at 10 to 15 mph, less humidity, but still hot! Drink plenty of fluids and find that shade.

The “Beef” is going to Arby’s: England’s Andrew “Beef” Johnston, who is making his PGA Championship debut, recently signed an endorsement deal with Arby’s. He will sport an Arby’s logo on the right side of his shirt and on the back of his hat at Baltusrol this week. Johnston tees off at 12:35 p.m. Thursday from the 1st hole with American Scott Piercy and Sweden’s Alex Noren.

Welcome back Bobby Nichols: Bobby Nichols, 80, is on site to honor a PGA tradition – attending tonight’s Champions’ Dinner at Baltusrol. Nichols said he won’t forget his first dinner, in 1965, a year after he posted a then-record 271 to win at Columbus (Ohio) Country Club. Former PGA President Lou Strong tabbed Nichols to serve as the first official dinner host. “I asked who was going to pay for the dinner, and Lou said that it would be taken care of,” said Nichols. “Then, I decided to have some fun. At the end of the meal, I said that we needed to collect from each Champion beginning in 1942 to help pay the tab. Before I could say the year, Sam Snead, the 1942 Champ, was headed for the door. We had to all call Sam back, letting him know that we were just teasing.” (Courtesy PGA of America)

Father-Son Coaching at Baltusrol: Reigning PGA Professional Champion Rich Berberian Jr. is joined inside the ropes during his PGA Championship practice rounds by the only golf coach he’s ever had, his father, Rich Berberian Sr., a PGA Life Member in Melbourne, Florida.  Berberian is one of four players in the field who are sons of a PGA Club Professional. The others: Rich Beem, son of the late Larry Beem; Keegan Bradley, son of Mark Bradley, a PGA Director of Instruction at Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis in Jackson, Wyoming; and Zac Blair, son of Jimmy Blair, the PGA Director of Golf at Sun River Golf Club in St. George, Utah. Senior Meet Junior: Reigning Senior PGA Professional Champion Rocco Mediate, 53, is the oldest member of this week’s field by one day over PGA Club Professional Rick Schuller of Chester, Virginia. South Korea’s Jeunhung Wang is the youngest in the field at 20 years, 10 months, 22 days. (Courtesy PGA of America)
