High School Sports Bergen County Ice Hockey Tournament Quarterfinals by Sunil Sunder Raj January 20, 2016 Don Bosco Prep (5) vs. Ramapo (2) – Senior forward Chris Mazzella scored goals to lead the Ironmen to a 5-2 victory over the Ramapo Raiders in the quarterfinals of the Bergen County Ice Hockey Tournament at the Ice Vault Arena in Wayne, New Jersey. Senior goaltender Ryan McGrath made 14 saves in net. The Ironmen got off to a fast in the 1st period scoring three times including a goal from senior Marcus Gureca 2:25 into the period. Don Bosco dominated play applying tons of pressure inside the Ramapo zone and getting shots on goal. The Ironmen outshot the Raiders 42-16 in the game. “We’re in the tournament so anytime you get a win and move on that is all you care about” said Don Bosco Prep Head Coach Greg Toskos” “Ryan McGrath’s first start ever and comes out making a big save on a 2 on 1” added Toskos. Ramapo got on the board in the 2nd period as senior Graham Key ripped a blast past McGrath on a 2 on 1 play with 8:15 remaining. The Raiders trimmed the Ironmen lead down to 4-2 1:48 into the 3rd period on a goal from junior Michael Pear. However, Mazzela notched his second tally of the contest with 10:49 left flicking a shot past Raiders goalie Cort Fodi. “Chris is a four-year varsity guy and special hockey player,” said Greg Toskos. “A pure goal scorer and has the talent to put the puck in back of the net” “He should had three more goals tonight” Ramsey(4) vs. Mahwah(2)- Ramsey seniors Anthony Steffe and Kyle DeBel each scored twice leading the Rams to a 4-2 win over the Mahwah Thunderbirds in the quarterfinals of the Bergen Ice Hockey Tournament at the Ice Vault Arena in Wayne, New Jersey. Senior Tyler Harmon registered 22 saves. DeBel put on an offensive show in the 2nd period scoring twice in the span of two minutes and forty-one seconds putting Ramsey up for good 3-2. With 5:07 left in the period DeBel gathered the puck in back of the net and skated in front backhanding a shot past Thunderbirds goalie Jared Moss tying the game up at 2-2. DeBel made his presence known again a minutes later ripping a screamer from a bad angle top shelf past Moss. Anthony Steffe salted the victory for the Rams with an empty-netter with 21.2 seconds left in the 3rd period. “We knew it was going to be a tough, sledgehammer kind of game going into it,” said Ramsey Head Coach Dean Portas. “Our boys did a great job stepping up in the second half of the game, persevering at the end and grinding” added Portas. “Kyle works well his teammates in Anthony and Frank and they have great chemistry and a line we rely on for a lot of our offense” “Tyler comes ready to play every game and great job reading and controlling tempo of the game” Ramsey got off to quick start in the 1st period as Steffe scored 32 seconds in skating into the Mahwah zone and blasting a puck past Moss. The Thunderbirds responded with 4:52 remaining as sophomore Patrick Larkin scooped up a loose puck in front of the Ramsey net and stuffed it past Harmon. In the 2nd period Mahwah went ahead with 7:33 left on a 2 on 1 play as sophomore Anthony DeAlto took a feed from senior Marty Kapoian and snapped a shot past Harmon.
