Blue Crabs Top Patriots 8-5

830garceauwebWaldorf, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (24-27, 50-71) defeated the Somerset Patriots (27-25, 65-57) 8-5 Tuesday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium.

 

“We’re in a big time postseason race so all these games are important, but this was a tough one. I love our grit though and we’ll always chip away. We can’t wait to come back tomorrow and play baseball,” said catalyst Vinny Zarrillo who has five multi-hit games in his last eight contests.

 

The Patriots scored three times in the second inning to grab a 3-0 lead. Carlos Guzman, Scott Kelly and Zarrillo each recorded RBI singles.

 

Southern Maryland would score the games next eight runs. Michael Snyder (21) and Zach Wilson (14) clubbed back-to-back home runs in the second inning.

 

Angel Sanchez hit a booming RBI double to even the score at 3-3 in the third inning.

 

Wilson broke the 3-3 tie with a go ahead grand slam (15) in the fifth inning. In 18 games against the Patriots, he has seven home runs and 20 RBI. Alfredo Marte capped the inning with an RBI double to make the score 8-3.

 

Kyle Roller ripped a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 8-5 which would be the final.

 

Former Blue Crab Shaun Garceau suffered the loss (4-4). He yielded eight runs in five innings of work. It was his first loss in eight outings since the All-Star Break. Gaby Hernandez earned the win (6-8). He retired 16 of the final 17 batters he faced. He went seven innings and gave up three runs. He had one win his first 16 starts, but now has five wins in his last six outings. All-Star Cody Eppley notched the save (28) pitching a perfect ninth inning.
