BlueClaws Rely on Longball to Beat Delmarva 3-1

Lakewood BlueClaws starter Damon Jones pitched five strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run, before handing the ball over to the bullpen.  Three BlueClaws relievers combined to shut the Shorebirds down over the final four innings giving the Claws a 3-1 win in front of 6,947 fans who came out to enjoy the sunshine and 70-degree temperatures.

Designated hitter, Jake Scheiner opened the scoring for the BlueClaws in the first, when his two out, home run tied the game 1-1.  For Scheiner it was his first round tripper of the season.

The game remained tied until the fifth, when lefty Josh Stevenson slashed a home run to the opposite field.  Stevenson’s second home run of the 2018 campaign put the BlueClaws up for good and his two hits moved his average to a sizzling .364.

Another BlueClaw, shortstop Nick Maton continued his hot hitting with two doubles and a single moving his average to a very respectable .357.

The Shorebirds left nine runners on thanks to the pitching of Jones, Alcantana, Ramirez, and Addison Russ who earned his first save of the season.  Brenan Hanifee (1-1) took the loss for Delmarva who’s record moved to 8-2.

The BlueClaws upped their record to 5-5 and have won four of their past five contests.

Sunday’s 1:05pm start and the closing game of the series is in question due to weather conditions.  Fan’s on the Jersey Shore only got a small taste of summer as temperatures for the Sunday match-up will be in the low forties, with rain expected throughout the day.

Be sure to check with the ballpark before heading to First Energy Park.
