Baseball BlueClaws Right-Hander Luke Leftwich Added to South Atlantic League All-Star Game Roster by Staff Post June 17, 2016 Luke Leftwich (Photo credit: Lakewood BlueClaws) Lakewood BlueClaws right-hander Luke Leftwich has been added to the Northern Division roster for the 57th annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, which will be played Tuesday night at the Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington, Ky. Leftwich joins second baseman Josh Tobias and outfielder Jose Pujols as Lakewood’s representatives with Pujols the starting right fielder for the Northern Division, which will oppose the Southern Division. Leftwich, who turned 22 on June 9, was 6-3 with a 2.15 earned run average through games of June 17 for the Philadelphia Phillies’ low Class A farm team. He’s fourth in the league in earned run average. He leads the league with 80 strikeouts and is first among league starters with 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Leftwich has thrown at least seven innings on three occasions this year, including eight scoreless frames against Lexington, a Kansas City Royals affiliate, at FirstEnergy Park on June 5. Leftwich also has three double-digit strikeout games, including 11 strikeouts on two occasions; Lakewood had only one double-digit strikeout game since the beginning of the 2013 season prior to his three this year. Drafted on the seventh round last year by the Phillies, Leftwich spent the 2015 campaign with the Williamsport (Pa.) Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League, a short-season Class A circuit. He went 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA. Lakewood, which began play in 2001, has had 56 players named to the game in its history.
