Olympics / Team USAThese Are The Breaks: Breakdancing Set To Debut On The Olympic Stage In 2024 by Jason Cordner December 12, 2020 Breakdancing has been an American staple and it’s set to make a grand entrance on the world’s stage in 2024.According to CNN, the International Olympic Committee announced that breaking would be added to the upcoming Paris Olympics on Monday, six years after the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires included the DanceSport event. Also confirmed for Paris by the IOC executive board were skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing. The @Paris2024 sports programme has been approved. It includes these main features: – 100% gender equality– Four additional sports: Skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and breaking– More youth-focused events– 10,500 athletes and 329 events#StrongerTogether— Olympics (@Olympics) December 7, 2020“Today is a historic occasion, not only for b-boys and b-girls but for all dancers around the world,” said World DanceSport Federation president Shawn Ray in a statement. “The WDSF could not be prouder to have breaking included at Paris 2024, and we thank everyone who helped make it possible: the executive board of the IOC, the Paris 2024 organizers, the WDSF staff and, most importantly, the breaking community itself.”According to CNN, the move is part of the International Olympic Committee’s goal to drumming up interest in the Games among “a younger audience.” Recognizing breakdancing as a sport is certainly one way to do that.Officials had previously proposed that breakdancing be added to the Olympic program and the proposal was announced on the official Paris 2024 Twitter page last year.https://twitter.com/Paris2024/status/1098514053109084160?s=20The IOC stressed its future priorities for Paris, and beyond to the 2028 Los Angeles Games, by claiming it will hit a long-term target of equal participation by men and women athletes, and more urbanized events. It’s great to see the Olympics will be adding new sports and sports like activities to their global games. Sports evolve all the time and it’s great to see so does the Olympic Games.
