Breaking down the historic all-female Royal Rumble match

For years, women’s wrestling in WWE wasn’t on par with the men’s. Now, they are the centerpiece of all programming. There have been women’s ladder matches, tables matches, Hell in a Cell matches and iron man matches. At the Royal Rumble, history will be made one more time, as there will be a 30 women Royal Rumble match. What does this all mean? For WWE, the women competing in the match and pro wrestling in general, it means everything.

This is the apex of the idea that is the Women’s Revolution, now Evolution. Over the past few years, more female stars who can actually wrestle have come to dominate the scene. While there are plenty of strong independent female wrestlers who have already made an impact, WWE has a chance to elevate that to a wider audience. The match is equal to the men’s in regards to the rules. Thirty women will compete in the over the top rope match, meaning that for some, it will be a productive evening.

Absent on the list is Paige, who was injured at a house show inside Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. It’s a shame she will miss the Royal Rumble match, as she was considered one of the principle founders of the true Women’s Revolution in NXT. She is sure to be there on the sidelines to root her friends on. How involved she can get in the match is up in the air.

Will Asuka win to remain undefeated heading into WrestleMania? What about underdog Becky Lynch, “The Boss” Sasha Banks or Alexa Bliss bestie Nia Jax? Who will take advantage and grab the bull by the horns.

Who else will be at the event? There are various scenarios that can take place, all involving great talent. These moments will get the fans going regardless, as unpredictability is key in the Royal Rumble.

The (NXT) Kids Are All Right

With 12 spots remaining, there are a few slots opened for Triple H’s kids in NXT. The Iconic Duo of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay have the best shot in showing up in the match. Their collective charisma is infectious, making them fan favorites wherever they go. Expect some shenanigans between the two if they were to sneak their way into the match. Another name considered is Mae Young Classic winner Kairi Sane. Speaking of, fellow MYC competitors Abbey Laith, Mercedes Martinez and Bianca Belair could all appear. An NXT invasion would be very interesting to see.

Turning Back the Clock

The remaining spots will most likely be for women of the past. The Bella Twins, while not the past per se, have slowly transition away from wrestling over the years. Due to the time away, fans would appreciate seeing mommy Brie and Nikki back.

Raw recently celebrated it’s 25th year in New York, and a few people who may show up at the Rumble came back after a while away from the ring. The Undertaker’s wife Michelle McCool, Jacqueline and even Torrie Wilson could all make an appearance. Other stars rumored to make a return are Kaitlyn and Molly Holly.

What fans really want is some Stratusfaction. Since appearing at Raw 25, the idea of Trish Stratus being in the Royal Rumble is gaining traction. Even if it’s for one more moment, seeing a true pioneer getting her due in a women’s Royal Rumble match would be pretty special.

I Don’t Give a Damn ‘Bout My Bad Reputation 

The biggest question is whether former UFC star Ronda Rousey makes her WWE debut at the Royal Rumble. There are back and forth rumors whether pen has been put on paper or not. Ronda has found a way to keep fans on their toes, posting several Instagram photos from Colombia. Is she actually not in Philly, or is this all an elaborate rouse to swerve us all. If she is in it, expect a victory by the former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion.

Don’t Cross the Boss

McMahon’s really like to be involved in history-making moments. Stephanie McMahon, the companies self-appointed leader of the Women’s Revolution, will be commentating this match. If history has told us anything, it’s that not everything is what it seems. There have been times when a member of the commentary team has entered a Royal Rumble match. Each time has been shocking. This time, it would not surprise anyone if Stephanie did this. If she were to enter, and win, the fans in Philly will not be happy. The hope is that if she is involved it will be in a limited role. Maybe her and Ronda can go at it one more time.

Regardless of the winner, it will be a moment to remember for women’s wrestling everywhere. Let’s sit back, relax and enjoy some history. Oh, and hope for an Asuka win.
