Boxing Brooklyn Brawling: Danny Garcia v. Shawn Porter set for September 8 Two knockout artists will clash, with an important prize on the line by Daniel Yanofsky July 25, 2018 Brooklyn has been kind to boxing over the years, thanks in large part due to super fights that deliver. Will history repeat itself on September 8? Danny Garcia is set to clash against Shawn Porter at the Barclays Center on September 8. The fight, shown on Showtime, will be for the vacant WBC Welterweight Title. This fight will bring in a wide variety of fans, especially to support a local kid. The 30-year old Garcia (34-1) hails from Philadelphia, and has fought at the Barclays Center six times before this bout. Garcia is a former Welterweight Champion, beating Robert Guerrero in 2016 for the title. A loss to Keith Thurman at the Barclays Center in 2017 set him back to being a contender. He returned back in February and defeated Brandon Rios via knockout. Garcia discussed the opportunity to regain his title: “I’m excited and motivated to go in there and recapture what’s mine. The WBC title belongs to me. Come September 8, I’m going to prove that I’m the best fighter in the world. My loss is behind me and it’s given me a chip on my shoulder to run that extra mile and train even harder. I know that Shawn Porter is not on my level. I’m coming to fight him in the middle of the ring and I’m going to beat him at his game.” Garcia faces a tough challenge in Shawn Porter (28-2-1), who has won three fights in a row heading into their September showdown. A former Welterweight Champion himself back in 2013, Porter lost the title to Kell Brook via unanimous decision in 2014. Since then, Porter has gone 4-1, beating elite fighters like Adrien Broner, Andre Berto and Adrian Granados. Both fighters present a tough challenge to one another, considering both are knockout artists. Garcia has won 20 fights via KO while Porter has won 17. They will need that power of the punch in order to regain a title they once coveted. Thurman, who beat both men (one as a contender and one as a champion), vacated the belt back in April due to a lingering elbow issue. Speaking about the fight, President of DiBella Entertainment Loi DiBella had the following to say: “Danny Garcia vs. Shawn Porter will be an action-packed, can’t-miss brawl. This hugely important matchup is between two of the best welterweights in the world and pressure fighters with pleasing styles. Both Garcia and Porter have shined in memorable battles at Barclays Center and September 8 will be a tremendous night for boxing.” Going further, President of TGB Promotions Tom Brown broke down what these fighters mean to the sport of boxing. “Danny Garcia against Shawn Porter in a welterweight title fight is a throwback to the era when you had Thomas Hearns battling Roberto Duran. Their styles are tailor-made to create action in the ring. Porter comes forward and throws punches in bunches and Garcia doesn’t back up for anyone. This one will be decided in the center of the ring like all the great welterweight championship matches.” Tickets for the event can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, the Barclays Center box office or by calling 800-745-3000.
