Brooklyn Nets Hire Hall of Famer Steve Nash as Head Coach

Nash has a relationship with Nets general manager Sean Marks who was his teammate with the Phoenix Suns.

The Brooklyn Nets announced Thursday the hiring of Hall of Famer Steve Nash as their next head coach. He signed a four-year contract with the team, according to ESPN.

The Hall of Fame point guard, has been working as a player development coach with the Golden State Warriors. Since his retirement in 2015, Nash has been pursued for many jobs around the NBA including front-office and head-coaching opportunities – he had resisted until now.

Nash has a relationship with Nets general manager Sean Marks who was his teammate with the Phoenix Suns. He also has built a relationship with Nets star Kevin Durant during his time with the Warriors.

Durant, is now part of a super-team in Brooklyn along with Kyrie Irving. Nash will be tasked with leading this group that will have high expectations heading into the 2020-21 season.

Nash is no stranger to New York City as his charitable foundation held their annual celebrity soccer game there.

Despite having no coaching experience, Nash has a history of leadership and tremendous basketball IQ, traits Marks and Nets owner Joe Tsai likely held very high throughout the pursuit.

The Nets fired Kenny Atkinson in March with Jacque Vaughn taking over as interim coach in the NBA bubble. The Nets are keeping Vaughn on staff and making him the highest-paid assistant in the league, according to reports. Vaughn was the only other known candidate for the head coaching job.
