Brooklyn OT Justin Morgan Earns Offer, Commits

Rutgers’ 2016 recruiting class is coming to fruition.

Poly Prep (Brooklyn, N.Y.) offensive tackle earned a scholarship offer from Rutgers after a strong showing at programs’ second segment of their Big Man Academy Friday. He committed on the spot.

The 16-year old is a giant, standing at 6-6, 339, and already put in hard to work to get down to that weight from 400-pounds. “I went through physical and mental change,” Morgan said in an interview with scarletreport.com after his verbal pledge. “I lost 60-pounds, mentally I eat right, [and] make sure everything is on track.”

Ranked a two-star recruit from rivals.com, Morgan is the No. 8 ranked player in the state of New York. Rutgers has now secured four of the top ten recruits from the Empire State, including Morgan’s teammate in linebacker Elias Reynolds, and Grand Street Campus wide receivers Taysir Mack and Ahmed Bah.

NJ Advance Media/NJ.com New Jersey recruiting analyst Todderick Hunt said Morgan could earn an offer earlier in the day, and he did just that.

Morgan has only played one year of high school football (his junior season) so he is raw, but has the upside. Scout.com’s Brian Dohn says about Morgan: “Morgan’s first year of high school football was his junior season, so there is a ton of room for growth. He gets off the ball well and is able to use his length and strength to overpower defenders. He is aggressive but he needs to learn how to engage and stay on the block. Also, Morgan has a good motor and blocks down the field, but he has to continue to trim weight, which will help his footwork and his flexibility.”

As a former basketball player, Dohn also cites Morgan’s athletic ability, and says he has “really good footwork” ,but “he’s (going) to have to learn a lot of technique”. Dohn also says his initial punch off the line will get better once he gets stronger in the upper body.

Morgan becomes the 11th player to commit to the Scarlet Knights and joins fellow offensive lineman Nick Krimin of St. Joes in Metuchen N.J. Morgan and Krimin are two big bodies who will look to keep quarterback commit Anthony Russo upright, and open holes in the run game for Trey Sneed.
