Cappie Comes to Life for Liberty; Named Player of the Week

After winning just two of their first six games of the season, all appears to be right in Liberty land. A modest two-game winning streak and a .500 record has calmed the fans, many of whom were calling for coach John Whisenant’s head some 10 days ago.

Want more evidence that New York is back on track? Look no further than Cappie Pondexter.

The Libs’ heart and soul, Pondexter has come back to life following a slow start to the season. Over the last three games, the flashy guard has averaged 22.3 points and seven assists. Those numbers were good enough to earn Pondexter the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week honor for games played from June 20 to 26.

The latest award marks the 11th time that Pondexter has claimed the weekly title – a staggering fourth best in WNBA history. For the season, Pondexter 17.5 points, 5.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds.

A fan favorite in every arena, Pondexter not only earned POW honors, she might have earned the top spot on one Tulsa boy’s all-time best moments. Prior to the Liberty’s 94-82 win over the Shock last Thursday, a Tulsa ballboy became enamored with Pondexter’s trademark orange sneakers.

According to the Associated Press, the ballboy told Pondexter that he had never seen sneakers like that and asked if he could have them.

“I thought why not,” Pondexter told the Associated Press.

After helping Pondexter score 23 points and dish out 10 assists, the sneakers went from the Liberty guard’s feet and into the hands of the ballboy.

“He was excited,” she recalled.

Now that the Cappie that we all know and love is back in action, I think we’re all pretty excited.
