Could the Bombers make a Late Play for a Stud Free Agent?

The longer Bryce Harper and Manny Machado remain unsigned, the better the chance the New York Yankees land one of the two all-stars.

Brian Cashman has been known to play the waiting game, ready to pounce on a potential deal when the market works in his favor. Reports have surfaced that Machado is holding out in hope the Yankees make a run for him. Earlier this week, Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge mentioned he would switch positions if Bryce Harper joined the Bombers.

All offseason the two major free agents have been linked to New York. Cashman could be waiting until the asking price for either of these players drops to the point where the Bombers would have to sign Harper or Machado. Similarly to the Giancarlo Stanton deal, the Yankees did not need Stanton, but with such a low asking price, Cashman pounced and added the former National League MVP via trade.

The Yankees have made plenty of moves this offseason, all of which have not included a superstar player. The Bombers have certainly improved a strength in the bullpen by adding Adam Ottavino, deepened its rotation by adding James Paxton and re-signing J.A. Happ, and signing who the Yanks see as a super utility player, DJ LeMahieu. The Yankees have improved, but are they better then rival and reigning champion Boston Redsox?

There have also been reports form agents who have said if they were representing Machado, they would take him to Japan to sign a massive one year deal. Are one year deals on the table for these 26 year old free agents? Could the Yankees sign Harper or Machado to one year deals so they could prove their worth and test the free agent market next off season?

Spring training begins in two weeks, Both Machado and Harper have waited patiently for the right offer this offseason. . Harper and Machado have yet to receive close to their base asking price of 10 years for $300 million dollars, and this could be great news for the Yanks.
