David Pindell named starting quarterback of UConn Football

Randy Edsall had played it close to the vest on this one, but it was made official on Wednesday when it was announced that David Pindell had been named the starting quarterback for the UConn Huskies.  Pindell is a senior and has been taking first team snaps all offseason, so it comes as no surprise.  He will backed up by redshirt freshman Marvin Washington.

What was surprising was the amount of freshmen that were announced as starters by Edsall.  Starting right guard Christian Haynes is a freshman, as is cornerback Keyshawn Paul, punt returner Kyle Buss and kick returner Keyion Dixon.  According to Courant.com, Edsall also praised freshman lineman Travis Jones.

“Wait until you see him on the field,” Edsall said. “He’s an athlete. Yeah, he’s got a lot of things he’s got to work on, but you talk about the attitude and work ethic he has, and the kid always has a smile on his face. … Just a wonderful kid.”

It’s no surprise that Edsall is going with the youth movement in his second stint with the team because UConn is most likely to lose at least eight games this season.  Their first two matchups are against Top 25 teams in “National Champion” UCF and Boise State.  It’s a far cry from the 2011 Fiesta Bowl team, but with each week this young team will improve.  Give the ball coach a little room to breathe.  It’s most likely going to be a long season.  A season preview is coming in the next week or so.
