DB Damon Hayes Commits To Rutgers

Rutgers football landed a second commitment of the weekend, and another prospect who has flown under the radar.

2016 defensive back Damon Hayes of Dr. Henry Wise (Upper Marlboro, Md.) verballed to Rutgers shortly after a scholarship offer from the Scarlet Knights Saturday. Hayes took part in the second session of the Rutgers Skills Camp this weekend and was regarded as having a “lockdown” impressive performance.

NJ.com’s Todderick Hunt was there live at the camp and said, “Of his 25 one-on-one repetitions, Hayes gave up only two catches, had three interceptions, and at least 15 pass break-ups, making the decision to offer an easy one for Rutgers.”

Not even ranked by any of the major recruiting sites Scout and Rivals, Hayes has enjoyed camp success, and will play cornerback for the Scarlet Knights. 247Sports.com lists him as a three-star recruit according to their Composite.

Hayes earned defensive back MVP honors at a Nike Opening Regional Camp in Washington D.C. this past April.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound standout is another tall and long corner Rutgers will have at their disposal. The Scarlet Knights are taking a page out of the Seattle Seahawks playbook of players with guys like Richard Sherman. Redshirt freshman cornerback Isaiah Wharton and freshman cornerback Blessuan Austin are both 6-foot-1 as well. Former Seahawks defensive coordinator and current Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn, friend and former coaching partner at Hofstra with Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood, helped guide the Seahawks defense in his first year as coordinator, where they led league in fewest points allowed, fewest yards allowed and takeaways, en route to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory.

Hayes becomes Rutgers’ 12th commitment for the class of 2016, and chose Rutgers over offers from Maine, Morgan State, and Old Dominion, and interest from Maryland among others. Don’t let the no stars fool you, this under the radar recruit can play. He can be physical and has “improved his acceleration” according to Scout.com.
