Pro Wrestling DGS Main Event Pro Wrestling Overrated Wrestler of the Year – Roman Reigns by Daniel Yanofsky December 27, 2016 Roman Reigns (WWE.com) This might be the most controversial DGS Main Event Award. For a long time Roman Reigns was considered Vince McMahon’s “chosen one”; the next John Cena. He was booked in high profile matches and won almost every one of them. The company (higher management anyway) was getting what they wanted. The only problem? Fans didn’t agree at all. While I have written pieces that were negative about Roman before, I did write some praising him. Roman’s 2015 ended on a high note. He was getting the fan interaction WWE was hoping for. And then the Reigns v. Authority angle was hit into overdrive with the “One v. All” scenario. If you have a guy who wears a bulletproof vest while wrestling, it’s hard to believe he’s the underdog. Ever since Triple H made his “surprise” return at the Royal Rumble earlier this year and won the WWE Title, fans knew what to expect. At WrestleMania 31, it looked like Reigns was going to beat Brock Lesnar for the title. Seth Rollins intervened and won the match. The fans cheered for that. This year, there was no Seth Rollins. Reigns won the title to a sea of boo’s (the record-breaking crowd at WrestleMania could vouch that the reaction was louder than what appeared on the Network. What exactly qualifies Roman for this award? I’ll start off saying that I believe he has improved in the ring, but I also believe it is based on the opponents he has faced. You are going to get great matches out of A.J. Styles, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins. He was basically shoehorned into the Seth Rollins/Kevin Owens rivalry, taking the title opportunity Seth should be in (never mind the fact that he has only defended his US Title 2-3 times). My main gripe is how obvious the outcomes of his matches are. He has over 30 wins this year, and his losses may be very low. The only time he lost multiple matches cleanly was when he was SUSPENDED FOR VIOLATING WWE’s WELLNESS POLICY. Even then, he still fought in a WWE Title match after his suspension ended (which he was relentlessly booed by fans for). The way he wins now is like the John Cena formula: fight, opponent hits their finisher, Roman kicks out, spear, Roman wins. The problem most fans have with Roman is that he is put into every major spot, even if there’s cause for him not to be. Who knows what 2017 has in store for Roman, but one can only hope there is a regression of obvious booking for “The Big Dog”. A little harsh? Consider this constructive criticism. The fault also belongs to the head honchos who book him to be something he is clearly not. This could be fuel to motivate Roman to become a future Wrestler of the Year. Until then, he has the honor to be this year’s Overrated Wrestler of the Year. Believe that!
