It almost seemed inevitable. Less than 24 hours after trading Jay Bruce to the Indians and a few weeks after trading Lucas Duda to the Rays, Mets GM Sandy Alderson has made the move fans have been waiting for. Dominic Smith, the teams No.2 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, will be joining the Mets in Philadelphia on Friday. After a short time away from one another, he will reunite with former minor league teammate Amed Rosario.

It’s officially a new era for the New York Mets!

Over the past few weeks, Sandy has been adamant that the 22-year old Smith would join Rosario in the big leagues sometime at the end of August. The timing couldn’t be more perfect, with the Mets making moves to secure a chance at contending in 2018. Dominic Smith seems to be the perfect addition to a team with a lot of power. In 114 games for the Mets’ Triple-A Las Vegas team, Smith had a .330 average with a career high 16 home runs and 77 RBIs. His OBP was .386 while his slugging percentage was .519.

It looks like Smith’s call up will favor his recent power surge. The Mets play the next few days at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Ballpark before going to Yankee Stadium to face the Bronx Bombers. Whether he takes advantage of the these ballparks will be up to him.

Is Dominic Smith the Mets’ savior? While fans are hoping that is the case, nothing just happens overnight. Like Amed Rosario, he shouldn’t receive that title right away. It’s a step in the right direction however for a team looking to finally show what the future can do.
