Robbie Lawler – Donald Cerrone – UFC 217 (LowKick MMA)

The rumors of potential fights for the UFC’s return to MSG for UFC 217 just keeps on growing. The latest reports have pegged both Donald Cerrone and Robbie Lawler to fight on the New York card. After an epic battle at UFC 214 in which Lawler won, these two are raring to go for some competition.

Sorry folks, if it was to happen, it appears they wouldn’t fight one another again.

According to LowKick MMA, the camps of both Robbie Lawler (28-11 (1)) and Jorge Masvidal (32-12) have been contacted. A potential bout for an interim Welterweight Title has been the main piece of this rumor. It is definitely interesting considering Lawler was champion before Tyron Woodley won it from him at UFC 201.

It appears the beef between Woodley and Dana White is worse than it seems, especially after Tyron’s last two fights. The winner of the Woodley v. Maia debacle was supposed to face GSP, but Dana changed his mind. Instead, GSP v. Bisping has been rumored to be taking place at MSG. If this bout were to happen and for a title, expect an already angry Welterweight Champion to become furious.

It is pretty much known that Donald Cerrone (32-9 (1)) loves to fight. Immediately after his loss at UFC 214, “Cowboy” was moving onto the next bout, whatever it may be. In an interview with MMAJunkie, he expressed his interest in fighting at UFC 216 on September 9th in Edmonton. However, he believes the UFC has other plans for him, stating:

“I think they’re going to hold me off and put me on Madison Square Garden. I have a silly hunch. But who cares? I like to fight. So bring that sh*t on.”

Like Lawler, Cerrone has yet to fight on a New York-based card. Regardless of where he is or who his opponent would be, Cerrone appears to be up for the challenge.

Besides GSP v. Bisping, this would be the fourth rumored match for the card. The other two fights being talked about for New York would be Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt v. TJ Dillashaw and Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk v. Rose Namajunas.
