DoubleGSports Annual Awards honor NY Islanders As Most Improved Team

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the New York Islanders?

Their five straight trips to the Stanley Cup Finals 1979-1985, claiming Lord Stanley’s cup the first four trips? The Dynasty!

I mean yes, it should be remembered at the pinnacle of the list. However, as of the last decade really, especially with younger fans, the memory is not as bright. Since the 2004-2005 lockout, the Islanders have made the post season twice, not making it past the quarterfinals.

It seems only fitting that the last season at the Coliseum in Uniondale, NY the team seems to have a much-needed spark. Jaroslav Halak, 29 year old goaltender in his 9th NHL season, first with the Islanders, has a save percentage of .910 and a record of 25-9 halfway through the season.  Certainly this adds some much needed confidence.

A strong net minder is only half the battle. Goals. Goals win hockey games.  With team leading captain and within the top ten scorers of the league, John Tavares has buried 21 between the pipes.

They just mesh. A sense of urgency is present, which was not always there.  With a new home on the horizon it’s all or nothing at this point. They are rockin’ out the barn for last season.

So far, so good.

Post All-Star break, we will see what they have in store!

With a whole new vibe, the New York Islanders have touched our hearts at Double G, and that’s why we are proud to call them the Most Improved Team!
