The Philadelphia Eagles released two-time Pro Bowler and 11 year veteran guard Evan Mathis on Thursday afternoon.

Mathis’ release is a tough situation all around as he will have to find a contract better than the one he had while in Philly, while the Eagles will have to replace one of the highest rated offensive linemen in the league.

Mathis reached the Pro Bowl twice, played in nine games last season and led all Eagles offensive players with 3,675 snaps in the past four seasons.

Although it is not an ideal situation for the Eagles, the release of Mathis shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to fans. Mathis and the Eagles have been disputing contract details and discussing trade options for the past two off-seasons. This stems from the unhappiness he felt with his five-year, $25 million contract he signed back in 2012. Mathis was also absent in all of the Eagle’s optional OTAs and would have been fined if he skipped the next round of mandatory training.

The 33-year-old Alabama native is no stranger to moving around the league. He joined the Panthers back in 2005 and since then has played for the Dolphins, Bengals, and Eagles.
