East Coast Sweep Has US Women’s Water Polo Looking Strong Ahead of Rio

How patriotic and inspirational that during the 4th of July weekend, the U.S. Women’s Water Polo team took over Fordham University for the final game of a three game series with the Hungary’s Women Water Polo team.

The U.S.A Women’s Water Polo team defeated Hungary, the reigning European champions, 10-7 behind Maggie Steffens’ three goals. Goalie Ashleigh Johnson also shined with an eight save performance considering how strong Hungary came out the gate.

Hungary lead early on but the U.S team closed the game in strong fashion behind Maddie Musselman power play strike with about 6:35 left in the match leaving Team USA up 9-6. Hungary would only score one more point in the rest of the game.

The three game series started last Monday in Miami, then traveled to Greenwich Connecticut on Thursday, before concluding on July 2nd in the Bronx. It was a festive crowd in attendance. Considering tickets where only $20 dollars, a lot of young girls and boys were cheering on their country heroes. That was something the U.S team appreciated as they waved thank you to the fans after the match.

The win completed a three game East Coast sweep for the Americans over Hungary. The U.S team will head to California, before traveling to Rio, for a three game series with Russia being on July 21.
