Less than a week ago, the Piscataway High School’s football team, the Chiefs, (6-2) ended their regular season with a defeat against Edison by a score of 52-13. This weekend, the Chief’s started their first round of Central, Group 5 playoffs with a win against the Hunterdon Central Red Devils by a final score of 41-14.

Senior back Elijah Barnwell helped lead the Chiefs to their first playoff game victory with two touchdowns in the game. Barnwell carried 12 times for 110 yards, leading Piscataway’s offense. This game added to Barnwell’s record in being Piscataway High School’s all-time leading rusher.

Seniors Joshua Boyde, Rodney Williams, Trey Hohan, and Juwon Jackson scored touchdowns in the game. One extra point was missed in the second quarter after the third TD of the game.

The Hunterdon Central Red Devils went into the game with a regular season record of 6-3. They did not play the Chiefs in the regular season. After being down by 20 in the first quarter, the Red Devils got on the board in the third quarter. Both touchdowns for Hunterdon were scored by senior quarterback Christian Shaw.

The Red Devils did not have a penalty called on them until the last quarter, while Piscataway had a few throughout the game due to false starts and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Piscataway will face Old Bridge in the sectional semi-finals on Friday. In the regular season the Chiefs faced a 24-20 loss from Old Bridge. We’ll see if Piscataway can find a way to get those extra points needed to defeat Old Bridge.

Piscataway has made it to the playoffs for 25 years. Their playoff record stands at 37-16, with eight sectional titles. Last year Piscataway was eliminated in the first round. The last time the Chiefs won a sectional title was in 2011. Head coach Dan Higgins has led Piscataway to four sectional titles so far.
