Uncategorized Former Rutgers QB Named Player of the Season of the Italian Football League by Staff Post June 21, 2015 httpss://twitter.com/IFL_Magazine/status/611122635238436865 Benvenuti in Italia. Welcome to Italy. After choosing to continue his football career after his time “On the Banks” was up, former Rutgers quarterback, and fan favorite, Chas Dodd signed with the Lazio Marines of the Italian Football League, founded in 2008. No, not futbol, American football. According to NJ Advance Media’s Dan Duggan, “Dodd’s stepfather, Bobby Bentley, a legendary high school coach in South Carolina, has worked football camps in Italy for the past 6-8 years as part of an effort to grow the sport. After visiting with Bentley last spring, Dodd liked the idea of continuing his career for a team based in Rome.” Dodd did more than that as he was honored as the league’s Player of the Season (MVP), by IFL Magazine in Italy. Players were placed on a voting ballot who earned at least one player of the week honor throughout the season. Dodd led the league with four, and edged out linebacker Raoul Lobont (18%) in voting with 20% to win the award. Dodd’s team dominated the regular season, going 9-1 before losing in the playoffs to the Milano Rhinos. The Marines had the best offense in the league, lighting up the scoreboard with 43.0 points per game including 401.3 yards per game. The Lyman, S.C. native led the IFL with 295.8 passing yards per game. Granted it is not the National Football League, but could you argue that Dodd is the most successful former Rutgers signal caller to play professionally in recent memory? *** As DoubleGSports.com pointed out recently, former Scarlet Knight stars Jamaal Westermann (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) and Tiquan Underwood (Hamilton Tiger-Cats) are playing up north in the Canadian Football League. The two teams face each other on Thursday, July 2. The regular season kicks off on Thursday, June 25, and ESPN will televise 20 CFL games and an additional 69 games will be available on ESPN3.
