College Former St. John’s Coach, Brian Mahoney, Inducted Into MAAC Honor Roll by Staff Post October 21, 2015 Former St. John’s men’s basketball head coach, Brian Mahoney was inducted into the MAAC Honor Roll this past weekend, Mahoney was a longtime assistant under legendary coach Lou Carnesecca, whom the arena is named after now. He took control of the team as head coach in the 1992-1993 season. In four seasons, Mahoney won 56 games and led the team to two postseason appearances. He was the 1993 Big East Coach of the Year and led the team to the second round of the NCAA tournament that same year. Additionally, he brought the team to the NIT tournament in 1994-1995. Mahoney also spent three years as the head coach of Manhattan College, from 1978-1981. He was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1998. He played for the Jaspers himself for three years and finished as the third-leading scorer in the programs history. He finished with 1,289 points, which ranks 16th all time. In his senior year he averaged 20.6 points per game and led the team to a victory against UNC in the 1970 NIT. Some other accolades of Mahoney’s career is that he was drafted in the fifth round of the 1971 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He went to play for the Nets of the ABA as well.
