Get to know Phillies prospect Kyle Dohy

Philadelphia Phillies prospect Kyle Dohy fell off most draft boards following a senior season at Cal Poly-Pomona in which he posted a 5.99 ERA. However, the Phillies took a chance on the left-handed pitcher, taking him with their 16th round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft.

“It was a great day to be drafted… I was really thankful for the Phillies to give me an opportunity. Their staff and organization has just been excellent,” Dohy tells me.

Since his start in the Phillies organization, Dohy has been nothing short of exceptional. He has posted a 3.42 ERA and held opponents to a .164 batting average. He greatly credits former Seattle Mariners pitching coach and current Philadelphia Phillies pitching coordinator Rafael Chavez, who helped him improve his delivery.

Since the beginning of his first full season, Dohy has spent no more than a couple months at each level of the minors and has quickly climbed the organizational ladder. The 22-year-old is already in Triple-A, where the average age of his teammates on his Lehigh Valley IronPigs is nearly 27.

Triple-A is where pitchers start to see major league quality hitters. Despite that, Dohy is still averaging nearly two strikeouts per inning and opponents are hitting only .183 off him on the season.

“I’m feeling good,” he told me after a pitcher’s workout at Coca-Cola Ballpark before Saturday’s game. “I’m figuring some stuff out. Hopefully I can just continue that process of learning and hopefully I’ll be in the big leagues soon.”

Dohy, the #15 Phillies prospect according to Baseball America, throws a four-seam fastball which sits 92-96 as well as a change-up which drops off the table and a slider with a great deal of movement. With such a dominant repertoire, Dohy says all he has to do is, “Command the strike zone” and his pitches will do the rest. He has primarily worked out of a middle-relief role and would be a great left-handed bullpen option for the Phillies.

Dohy’s goal for his career, “Pitch in the big leagues, and stay there…for a long time.”
