GGG To Return To MSG to Face Steve Rolls

GGG is looking for his first win since losing to Canelo Alvarez in their September rematch.

If Gennady Golovkin wants to have one more fight with Canelo Alvarez, he must be ready at a moments notice. He is taking that to heart, as a fight between him and Steve Rolls has been made official. The bout will take place on June 8 inside Madison Square Garden in New York.

This is the first fight GGG (38-1-1) will have under his six-fight, nine-figure deal with DAZN he signed on March 8th.

“I am very excited to be returning to the ring and bringing the Big Drama Show back to Madison Square Garden.  The Garden’s fans are fantastic,” said GGG.  “I love boxing and I promise to bring the best of me to everyone who will be watching me in an all-action fight with Steve Rolls.  I am very happy that GGG Promotions has a new home at DAZN.”

Golovkin is fighting for the first time since losing every middleweight title he owns to Canelo Alvarez back in September. This was a rematch from their 2017 draw. His his last three fights GGG is 1-1-1.

This will be a chance for Rolls (19-0) to get his name out there to a massive audience. The 35-year-old will be making his MSG debut and is the current USBA Middleweight Champion, winning the title back in December. With 10 wins via knockout, Rolls’ opportunity is one he will never forget.

“I want to sincerely thank DAZN and GGG himself for giving me the opportunity to challenge one of the best fighters in the world,” said Rolls. “But let me be clear: I’ve won national championships and represented my country, and Golovkin is just a man.  I’m coming to win this fight and put my name among the best middleweights in the world.”

A win by GGG could provide him the opportunity to face the winner of Canelo v. Daniel Jacobs. He is hoping his next fight will be in September. While this specific fight doesn’t sound like one that entices many, it is a chance for both fighters to prove themselves. For Rolls, it is all about showing the world who he is compared to what they think he is. For Golovkin, the chance to get back to the top while also making a good payday is never something you can simply ignore.
