Odell Beckham Jr. Agrees to Historic Contract Extension With Giants

Take a deep breath, the day has finally come.

The New York Giants and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. have agreed to a five-year, $95 million contract extension on Monday, per Josina Anderson of ESPN.  Ian Rapoport and Kimberly Jones of NFL Media first broke news of the soon-to-be finalized deal earlier in the day.

“It was just a time of patience and waiting and I knew that it would get done, it just was a matter of when and I’m just so happy that it is finally done now,” Beckham told the Giants official website.

Contract Details

This new deal makes Beckham the highest paid wide receiver in NFL history. The extension, which kicks in at the start of the 2019 season, guarantees Beckham $65 million in total. The 25-year-old receiver now ranks at the top at his position in guarantees. Before him, Mike Evans was the benchmark, making $55 million in total guarantees.

Not to mention he will make $19 million annually, which is now the highest among wide receivers, eclipsing Antonio Brown ($17 million).

Beckham’s contract is now the second-most for any non-quarterback, only behind linebacker Von Miller of the Denver Broncos ($114.5 million, $70 million guaranteed).

“It’s a five-year extension, six years total,” said general manager Dave Gettleman. “We got him until he’s 108. I never worried whether or not we would get it done. I’m pleased, because the litmus test for a contract is that neither side is ticked off before the ink can dry, and neither side should be ticked off. It’s a very fair deal.”

How Beckham Received Lucrative Deal

It’s no surprise that Beckham and the Giants would finally come to terms on this new contract. His play speaks for himself.

From his great rookie season, where despite missing the first four games of the season, Beckham hauled in 91 receptions for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns. In fact, Beckham has recorded at least 1,300 yards through his first three seasons. The only blip on the radar came last season, where he fractured his ankle in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

In his first four seasons in the NFL, Beckham has averaged the most receiving yards per game in NFL history in that span with 94.1. To realize how impressive that is, he leads over Hall of Famers Randy Moss (84.3) and Jerry Rice (81.4).

So far through his young career, Beckham has 313 receptions for 4,424 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Beckham has been one of the most explosive players in Giants history since Lawrence Taylor, so the thought of losing him to free agency could have potentially haunted New York for years to come.

During the negotiation process, Beckham didn’t hold out or refuse to report to training camp. He reported to every team activity this offseason, participated in drills once he was medically cleared, and kept contract talks to a hush.  All those factors resulted in the Giants taking him off the trading block, as he appeared committed to the team and excited to play under offensive-minded head coach Pat Shurmur.

Safe to say, his teammates seemed pretty excited a deal was made between both parties.
