Giants Release WR Dwayne Harris

An expected move this offseason has become a reality. The New York Giants have released wide receiver Dwayne Harris from his contract, the team announced. The move comes after Harris passed his physical early Thursday.

Harris a Salary Cap Casualty

Harris was entering the fourth year of his five-year, $17.5 million deal, which he signed in 2015. With his release, the Giants save $2.45 million in cap space.

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Harris, as the Giants signed former Denver Broncos wide receiver Cody Latimer this past Monday. The contract is for one-year, worth $2.5 million. Latimer is just like Harris, a dual wide receiver and kick returner. Not to mention the Giants’ new wide receivers coach, Tyke Tolbert, coached Latimer while both were in Denver.

Harris’ Time in New York

The 30-year-old wide receiver is primarily known as a kick returner, dating back to his time with the Dallas Cowboys. Since signing with New York, Harris still had the same role on special teams, as well as serving as the No. 3 receiver on the depth chart.

Harris’ 2017 season was cut short after suffering a fractured foot in Week Six, a game notorious for the season-ending injuries of himself, Odell Beckham Jr., and Brandon Marshall.

In his Giants career, Harris has 37 receptions for 409 yards and five touchdowns. One standout point is that Harris had only one reception in the past two seasons. Harris also had 53 returns for 1,352 yards and one touchdown.

The trend continues for the Giants, as new general manager Dave Gettleman is looking to retool the roster, while also freeing up some cap space. Harris has been added to the growing list and will likely have suitors on the free agency market.
