The NFL Draft was truly chaotic. The New York Giants saw some interesting choices fall down to them. However, Jerry Reese stuck to his guns and took the guy that he wanted. That guy was Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram.

The six-foot-three, 234 lbs. tight end is coming off a 65 reception, 926 yard, and eight touchdown senior campaign. Engram contemplated entering last year’s NFL Draft, but opted to return for his senior year, and did he ever reap the rewards. Engram won the Ozzie Newsome Award as the nation’s best tight end.

Engram is not the prototypical tight end. At Ole Miss, Engram lined up at slot receiver, as well as half back. At the combine, Engram ran a 4.42 sec 40-yard dash (1^st among TE) and a 6.92 sec 3-cone drill (2^nd among TE). Engram is something that the Giants needed to add to their offense, a big-bodied weapon.

“I can’t put it into words,” said Engram. “…New York was at the top. This is an amazing feeling…I know I’m ready to come in and make an immediate impact. I know for a fact.”

Engram has drawn comparisons to one tight end that serves as a problem for the Giants twice a season. That tight end is Jordan Reed. He even drew comparisons to one of the top wide receivers in the league, Mike Evans. If Engram can live up to these comparisons, the rest of the NFC East will have trouble containing him. This is something that the Giants looked into, and were obviously tempted by Engram’s potential.

“We think this guy can be a dynamic weapon in our offense,” said Giants general manager Jerry Reese. “…a matchup nightmare.”

“[Engram] checked all the boxes we look for in a quality player,” said Marc Ross, Giants Vice President of Player Evaluation. “…The more weapons you have, the harder you are to defend.”

It can be safe to say that Engram has already built up a rapport with Giants quarterback Eli Manning, an Ole Miss alum. Manning would visit the campus during the offseason and workout with the athletes. Did Manning give the Giants the green-light to draft Engram in the first round? It’s a possibility.

“Eli Manning texted me after to tell me congrats,” said Engram. “…Eli Manning is always around Ole Miss during the offseason…I’ve caught a couple of balls from him.”

Engram’s versatility gives the Giants plenty of different ways to use the tight end. As stated above, he can play in the slot, as well as halfback. Not known as a great blocking tight end, but don’t forget the Giants signed blocking specialist Rhett Ellison this offseason. Think of this, the Giants are pairing up Engram with Odell Beckham Jr, Brandon Marshall, and Sterling Shepard. Good luck to opposing defenses trying to stop this pass attack.

“I feel like I’m one of the most dynamic players in this draft,” said Engram. “…Coaches love to move me around to create mismatches…I get excited when I see a big linebacker trying to man me up.”

“We’re excited to add him to the mix and hit the ground running,” said Giants head coach Ben McAdoo. “…We’ll use him in a variety of ways.”

There you have it Giants fans. With the addition of Evan Engram, the Big Blue offense has become a fun offense to watch and has become a nightmare for opposing defenses.
