Football Giants Waive RB Paul Perkins by Scott Rogust May 10, 2018 The New York Giants announced on Thursday they have waived running back Paul Perkins. The transaction comes as a non-football injury designation, as Perkins suffered a pectoral injury this offseason. The 2016 fifth-round draft pick was the former starting running back for the 2017 season. However, he just could not get anything going ever since. Despite playing in 11 games, the UCLA product rushed for just 90 yards on 41 attempts, and hauling in eight receptions for 46 yards. Perkins was inactive for four games last season. The production was a far cry from his rookie season in 2016, where he shined late in the season. During that year, Perkins rushed for 456 yards on 112 attempts and caught 15 passes for 162 yards. Before the decision to waive him, Perkins saw himself on the outside-looking-in entering the summer. The Giants used their first round pick on Saquon Barkley, who will no doubt be the starting rusher for the foreseeable future. General manager Dave Gettleman brought in a familiar face from the Carolina Panthers in Jonathan Stewart. Wayne Gallman showed potential in 2017 as well, and will likely serve as a change-of-pace back. With the injury setback, Perkins would have had a difficult time earning a top role in the offense this summer. While Perkins was waived, it is unlikely that he will find himself on a new team due to the severity of his current injury. If he does go unclaimed, he will revert to the Giants’ injured reserve.
