Floyd Mayweather v. Conor McGregor (Showtime)

As Samuel L. Jackson once said, “Hold on to your butts” folks, something BIG has developed! Floyd Mayweather v. Conor McGregor has been made official. Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports was the first to break the news. The fight will be on August 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Showtime will be the home of the fight, which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena.

Rumors are going around that the most expensive ticket for the event appears to be around $71,000 with the cheapest tickets around $3,500. When tickets officially go on sale, fans will be able to see how much of their life savings they will be willing to spend away.  

This will be a straight boxing match. It would not be far off to say this could be the biggest inter-promotional match since Muhammad Ali v. Antonio Inoki in 1976. 

All I can say is this: WOW! I’ll be honest: I never thought this day would come. My thoughts were that this was one big troll job for the sake of publicity. For months, there have been rumblings of a fight like this, and all they were were rumors. I wanted pen on paper, otherwise they fooled us all. Well, I fooled myself. Once again, Conor McGregor has proven that anything is possible.

As is tradition with any fight, let’s look at the tale of the tape:

Conor McGregor is one of the best examples of a rags to riches story. He came from nothing and has risen above the ranks to become the true king of the world within the MMA community. With a 21-3 MMA record, the 28-year old Irishman is one of the most polarizing figures in MMA history. He can walk the walk, and can most certainly talk the talk. He became the first ever two-weight champion at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden. 

A key fact to add is that he has never competed in a boxing match before. Some say he has no chance at the undefeated Mayweather, but that is what Conor wants you to believe. He has proved he can do whatever he wants whenever he wants. Is a win against a seasoned veteran a hard accomplishment? Yes, but Conor always looks forward to the challenge. 

Conor even got started with the first blow. The fight didn’t even happen yet and he is already winning!

On the other side of the coin you have the undefeated Floyd “Money” Mayweather. This man is 49-0 in professional fights since he started in 1996. Cocky but efficient, Floyd can also back up his trash talk. The best part about his talent is his ability to pace a match. While some call it boring, his patience has provided him opportunities to strike, or even to outlast his opponent by the end of the fight. He announced his retirement from boxing in 2015 after defeating Andre Berto. A super fight that could overflow his already hefty wallet was too enticing not to accept. 

Both should be getting a pretty good payday from all of this. Mayweather makes about $1,000,000+ off every fight, while McGregor has never made close to that. Coming to an agreement must have had something to do with a fair amount. With the amount he could make, McGregor won’t need the UFC anymore. He would truly be set for life, especially with the birth of his new kid. Is the world truly ready for that?
