Gymnastics Events To Take Center Stage at Prudential Center This Weekend

For the first time in competition’s history, the AT&T American Cup – the first international competition of the season in the lead up to the Olympics, is being held in Newark , New Jersey.

U.S  Olympic gold medalist, Gabby Douglas, will be one of the 18 gymnasts from 11 countries to converge at the Prudential Center for the Cup. The AT&T American Cup kicks off the 2016 FIG World Cup season.

AT&T American Cup is one of the most prestigious international invitational events and features an all-around format. The list of former champions consist of some of the all-time greats, including  Jordyn Wieber, Nastia Liukin, Johnathan Horton, Bart Conner, Paul Hamm, Shawn Johnson, Shannon Miller, Peter Vidmar and Mary Lou Retton.

The international all-around competition features some of the best women’s and men’s artistic gymnasts in the world. Combined, the non-U.S. gymnasts have won three Olympic medals and 15 world championship medals.

Donnell Whittenburg joins Mikulak in the men’s competition. Mikulak, the three-time defending U.S. all-around champion, missed the World Championships with injuries. In his absence, U.S. runner-up, Whittenburg, led the team to a fifth place finish.

The weekend also includes the annual Nastia Liukin Cup for junior women gymnasts. That event is tonight at 7pm. The inaugural Elite Team Cup for rising junior and senior men’s gymnast will be held on Saturday at 6pm.

The American Cup, will be broadcast live on NBC at 1pm on Saturday. At media day, it was also announced that the American Cup will be returning to the Prudential Center next year.
