Baseball Has Pete Alonso’s Monster Home Run From Last Night Landed Yet? Alonso now has 11 home runs to start his major league career. by Daniel Yanofsky May 8, 2019 It is safe to say that Pete Alonso has helped the Mets believe they can compete in 2019. After all, he has put the entire team on his back since making the Opening Day roster. Don’t believe me? While you were sleeping last night he went out to the plate and proved it. The Mets put on a late rally to tie the game 5-5 against the Padres in Petco Park. With the game still tied heading into the top of the ninth, it was known that the Mets’ bullpen might not last if it went extra innings. That is when the 24-year-old rookie took matters into his own hands. Alonso ripped the ball all the way to the upper deck of Petco Park to give the Mets a 7-5 lead. For. The. Speaking of, did the ball land first or the bat following a celebratory bat flip? Almost like a “who shot first?” moment. The Mets ended up winning the game 7-6 following an Edwin Diaz save that almost wasn’t. That was Alonso’s eleventh home run of the year. He also had three hits and four RBIs in the game. Alonso’s slash line is now at .284/.362/.604, carrying off of his Rookie of the Month recognition only a few days ago. In fact, that was partially the reason for his motivated blast. Alonso was proving a point to Padres rookie pitcher Chris Paddack, who took exception to Alonso’s honor and claim that it would be him that would win Rookie of the Year. If that is all it takes for Alonso to show off his skills further than he already has, the Mets will gladly take it.
