He's Here! Ike Davis gets the call.

Ike Davis has arrived. The Mets have called up the future first baseman to see what he can do.

It’s the call most Mets fans wanted in spring training. Ike Davis became a fan favorite with his impressive spring but then Mets organization wanted to see him play more in Triple-A. They chose to give the first base job to a combination of Fernando Tatis and Mike Jacobs while waiting for Daniel Murphy to return from injury. Well, that didn’t work out so well.

Jacobs was struggling at the plate and Tatis is really not an every day type player. Last week the Mets designated Jacobs for assignment because they needed to add an extra pitcher to the roster in order to help the bullpen get some much needed rest.

Once rested, the Mets were then able to send a pitcher to Triple-A and call up the young first baseman. Davis arrived in Queens yesterday and was inserted into the lineup, batting sixth and playing first base.

The news put many Mets fans and columnists into a frenzy. It’s not that anyone expects Davis to be the savior, but he has shown the ability to his Major League pitching. Granted it was in a small sample during spring training but it was enough to get New York fans excited.

Ike Davis batted .480 in 25 at bats. That’s 12 hits, including three doubles and three home runs. Davis drove in 10 runs which tied him for third on the team. He walked three times and scored seven runs. The one stat working against Davis was his eight strikeouts. A .536 on base percentage is pretty darn good.

None the less, Davis was sent to Triple-A. After ten games with the Buffalo Bison, Davis was leading the team with a .364 average and had belted three doubles and two home runs in just 33 at bats. He walked nine times and struck out five times.

The first baseman got the call to the Majors and the Mets are hoping he can provide a bit of a spark to an offense that has been struggling. He arrived just in time to take batting practice before the Mets home game against the Chicago Cubs.

In his first at bat, Davis singled for his first Major League hit of his career. In the seventh innings, he would record his first RBI with another single up the middle. That hit came off of a lefty reliever. A good sign since Davis bats from the left side. He finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Mets manager Jerry Manuel said Davis fit right in with the club.

“He seems to be somewhat unfazed… you don’t see the anxiety that you would probably see in a person’s debut,” Manuel said. “He seems to be very comfortable with this environment.

“He just seemed like one of the guys. And that’s impressive.”

Look for Davis to be in the lineup as an every day player. What we can realistically expect is yet to be determined, but if his small sampling says anything, we can expect good things from the young first baseman.

We like Ike!
