Demetrious Johnson v. Ray Borg has been scrapped from UFC 215 (Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Getty Images)

In an unfortunate, but not surprising turn of events, Ray Borg has been scratched from the main event of UFC 215. Due to illness, the UFC Flyweight Championship fight between Borg and champion Demetrious Johnson will not go on as planned. UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes will take over as closer in what should be a fantastic bout against Valentina Shevchenko. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani was the first to report the news.

It is being reported that Borg has been sick for a while, and it is not due to his attempt in cutting weight. As a result, Borg has let go his nutritionist. That is significant due to the fact that Johnson appeared to deny a bout against T.J. Dillashaw after he believed Dillashaw would have issues with weight. As I stated above, this is not surprising considering Borg’s history. He has missed four of his last nine fights due to weight cut issues. Borg’s record of missing fights is pretty impressive when you think about it:

This information alone makes a Dillashaw fight that more appealing.

This news takes away potential history for Johnson, who with a win would break Anderson Silva’s record for most consecutive title defenses. After months of tension between him and the UFC, Johnson was finally going to get his time to shine in the main event of a major PPV. The hope is that this fight can take place sooner rather than later. It could happen at UFC 216 on October 7th in Las Vegas or UFC 217 on November 4th in New York City. While it may no longer be a main event, the fight will still be enticing to many.

Johnson’s loss is Nunes’ gain.  The champion had to back out of a fight against Shevchenko at UFC 213 due to illness. Dana White stated that she couldn’t be trusted to hold a main event spot again. Since then, Jon Jones sabotaged his win against Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, and now this. Something tells me Nunes won’t have anything to worry about anymore.

The UFC has had issue with fighters backing out due to many reasons all year. It is an epidemic that is hurting the company, while competition like Bellator is taking advantage. UFC 215 may not be the mega card everyone wanted, but it will have matches that, if they still stay together, could be talked about for quite some time.
