Football How Patrick Mahomes won Super Bowl LIV MVP by Chris Passarelli February 3, 2020 Patrick Mahomes was the odds-on favorite to win Super Bowl LIV MVP. For all those bettors that took him before the game, they were handsomely rewarded as Mahomes was named MVP after Kansas City’s 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Did Mahomes deserve it? I guess. Mahomes didn’t play particularly well, going 26/42 with 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran the ball nine times for 29 yards and a touchdown. However, he won the Super Bowl MVP for two reasons. The first and more important one is that Mahomes shone when the moment was the brightest. With the Chiefs down 20-10 with just seven minutes left in the game, Mahomes hit Tyreek Hill on a 3rd-and-15 to extend the drive. The Chiefs eventually scored 21 unanswered points to put the game out of reach and win Super Bowl LIV. The second reason why Mahomes won the Super Bowl MVP was because there weren’t many other choices. Bashaud Breeland probably would have been second choice, with six tackles, one tackle for loss and an interception to boot. Damien “Playoff Damien” Williams had a good game as well, scampering for 104 yards on 17 carries, scoring a rushing and a receiving touchdown. The consensus was always going to be Mahomes because he’s the young face of the NFL. The quarterback will always get the most credit when things are going well and the most blame when things are going poorly. It was a no-brainer to give the award to Mahomes.
