Baseball Is it time for the Philadelphia Phillies to call up Jake Thompson? by Matthew Burks July 10, 2016 Phillies prospect Jake Thompson (MiLB.com) The Philadelphia Phillies have had real consistency issues with pitching all season. They have had stretches where they are lights out and others where they get used for batting practice. With problems like these happening, maybe it’s time to call up one of their top pitching prospects in Jake Thompson. Jake Thompson was acquired from the trade that sent Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers. Currently, MLB.com lists Thompson as the 48th prospect in the minor leagues. Thompson is undoubtedly the best pitcher in the Phillies farm system. In fact, if you look up and down at the Phillies system, there isn’t anyone that comes close to his potential as a pitcher. Thompson boasts a quality arsenal of pitches that feature a slider and fastball with the ability to be above average in the majors. Thompson is regarded as high floor pitcher that, if all else fails, will be a number three guy in the rotation. If he manages to reach his potential, however, he has the capability of being the number two pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. Thompson is currently playing for the Ironpigs where he has been solid thus far. He currently has a 2.58 ERA with 72 strikeouts and only 31 walks. Thompson has proven that he can shut down triple-A competition and is ready to make his debut in the big leagues. The only question is, when will the Phillies call him up? It seems likely that, if Thompson is called up, it will be after the All-Star break. Thompson will fit nicely into this Phillies rotation and will get quality experience without have the pressure of feeling that he needs to be perfect in every outing. Thompson is a promising young player with the ability to be a key part of the Philadelphia Phillies pitching staff for a long time. His stats in the minors are unquestionable and the Phillies have a hole to fill in the rotation. If this team is smart, they will think long and hard about making the call and giving Jake Thompson a promotion to the majors.
