Baseball Jacob deGrom Named to NL All-Star Team The ace of the Mets was the only member of the team picked to play in the 2018 MLB All-Star Game. by Daniel Yanofsky July 9, 2018 It is no surprise that Jacob deGrom is one of the most valuable players the Mets have. While the Mets may not be competing this year, the league decided to award his amazing efforts. During the MLB All-Star Selection Show, it was announced that deGrom will be the lone Mets representative at the All-Star Game. The MLB have this rule where all teams must have a member of the organization at the All-Star Game. Teams with bad records get a chance to show there are players on the team who can build towards the future. The Mets may be sinking in the NL East, but deGrom has been floating on water. Jacob is having a true All-Star season, even without the correct amount of wins to prove it. With a 5-4 record, he leads the MLB with a 1.79 ERA, while striking out 142 batters. He is also second in the NL with a 0.99 WHIP. Do those numbers seem familiar? Think back to 2010, when Felix Hernandez ended the first half of the season with a 7-5 record. He also had a 2.88 ERA, 131 strikeouts and four complete games. He wasn’t even an All-Star and ended up winning the Cy Young with a 13-12 record and a 2.27 ERA. The last time deGrom was on an All-Star team was in 2015, the year the Mets made the World Series. It was a true coming out party for the now 30-year old, as he only needed ten pitches to strike out three batters. He become the first to accomplish that feat since pitch counts were recorded. deGrom now joins some exclusive company as a member of the Mets, as only a handful of pitchers have made multiple All-Star Games: DeGrom is the 13th pitcher in #Mets history to be named to multiple All-Star Games joining Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Jon Matlack, Jesse Orosco, Dwight Gooden, Sid Fernandez, Frank Viola, David Cone, Rick Reed, Tom Glavine, Pedro Martinez and Billy Wagner. — Michael Baron (@michaelgbaron) July 8, 2018 There is a chance more of his teammates join him as we head closer to the All-Star Game. As a result of any injury before the event, Asdrubal Cabrera and/or Brandon Nimmo could end up in Washington. It is time for Mets fans to marvel at the season deGrom is having. By the time the All-Star Game ends, we could be seeing the last of the Mets’ prized possession. If not, then breathe a sigh of relief, sit back and enjoy the show. The Midsummer Classic will be taking place July 17 at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
