Baseball Jason Vargas Update: No Announced Return Date Vargas is hoping to get back into form following a 5.92 ERA in seven appearances this season for the Mets by Daniel Yanofsky May 20, 2019 The cavalry may not be coming anytime soon, but it is a work in progress. After throwing 74 pitches in four innings for Double-A Binghamton this past Sunday, Jason Vargas is feeling pretty good. Vargas was put on the IL in May after dealing with hamstring tightness. “It definitely kept me from doing what I needed to do, but I felt pretty good out there today,” Vargas stated to the media in Binghamton. “I’ll probably see how things respond tomorrow and see where we’re at as a team and kind of go from there.” Before going down with an injury, Vargas was struggling with the Mets. In seven appearances Vargas has a 1-2 record with a 5.92 ERA. At age 36, Vargas has yet to showcase his run with the Royals in 2017 when he was the AL wins leader with 18. He has a 8-12 record with the Mets in 29 games, along with 89 earned runs and a 6.32 ERA. Vargas’ fastball during his rehab may need some improvement, but that won’t be all. His movement was all over the place, something a few more starts may fix. While the Mets wait for his return (if he improves), Wilmer Font will continue to get opportunities in the rotation.
