Football Jet Up – Jets lose a heartbreaking season opener to Bills by Chris Passarelli September 9, 2019 The New York Jets did exactly what they’ve done for the last 49 seasons; They blew it. In what feels like another chapter in what’s become a tired story, the Jets stumbled to the finish line and lost a tight game, this one being a 17-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills. There were many positives to take from this game. Sam Darnold looked good early, despite being 28/41 for only 175 yards and a touchdown. Le’Veon Bell had yet another productive day, including 60 rushing yards, 32 receiving yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion to give the Jets a 16-0 lead. The defense was ferocious in the first half, forcing four turnovers from Josh Allen, including two fumbles and two interceptions, one of those being a pick-six by C.J. Mosley on a deflection. Mosley was the story of the defense early, as he had the pick-six and a fumble recovery as well. Kaare Vedvik, the Jets’ new kicker, missed the extra point. The second half started off well for the D as well. After a slow first drive in the second half, the Jets punted and pinned Buffalo down on their own 2 yard line. The defense stood strong and forced a safety to give the Jets an 8-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Jets, as C.J. Mosley went down, so did the defense. Mosley went down late in the third quarter with a groin injury, and after he left the Bills scored all 17 of their points. A dropped interception by Marcus Maye gave the Bills the opportunity to cut the lead to 16-3. The fourth quarter was an unmitigated disaster for the Jets. They couldn’t get anything going on defense and rookie running back Devin Singletary shredded the Jets on the Bills’ first touchdown drive. John Brown put the nail in the coffin for the Jets with a long touchdown reception, and Sam Darnold’s underthrow of a wide open Robbie Anderson doomed the Jets. The loss stings for all Jets fans, especially the fact that the Jets blew a 16-0 lead late in the third quarter. Fortunately for them, it’s only Week 1 and they can build on this setback. Game Notes Kaare Vedvik most likely had his first, and only appearance with the Jets. The kicker missed both an extra point and a field goalC.J.
