As the New York Jets organization and Ryan Fitzpatrick are still in a stalemate in their contract negotiations, the starting quarterback job appears to be up for grabs between Geno Smith and 2016 second round pick, Christian Hackenberg.

Although Hackenberg has only been with the Jets organization for less than a month, Todd Bowles, Chan Gailey, and Mike Maccagnan have spoken very highly about Hackenberg. But the latest within the Jets organization to comment on the rookie is Brian Heimerdinger, the Director of Player Personnel.

In a radio interview with 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, Heirmerdinger said, “I think we have high hopes for Hack. He had a tough time in college, but he’s an unbelievable kid. He’s real [sic] smart. I’ve really enjoyed him so far since he’s been in the building. We’ll see how he progresses over the next couple of years.”

While discussing Hackenberg, Heirmerdinger was also asked about the latest with Ryan Fitzpatrick. “You hope to find some middle ground somewhere,” he said. “I think we’ve said all along as an organization that we want him back. I don’t think that’s changed at all. We’ll see how it plays out over the next couple of months. We’re hoping to get him back in.”

It would be a huge plus for the Jets if they could resign Ryan Fitzpatrick. A rookie quarterback in Hackerberg is probably not someone the Jets want to give the full time spot to just yet. Bryce Petty is in a similar situation because he has yet to play one snap in the NFL. And considering the 2014 season that Geno Smith had, I think Jets fans would much rather see Fitzpatrick under center next year.

Soon enough, Fitzpatrick should realize that the Jets appear to be his only option to have a starting role next year. Some players on the Jets have publicly expressed that they would like to have Fitzpatrick back after seeing his success last year. Ultimately, I think both sides will come to terms.

But until that happens, it sure sounds like that the Jets are content with Christian Hackenberg.
