Football Jets Make Right Decision in Sticking With McCown Jets head coach Todd Bowles does not plan to make a change at QB. by Mark Pereira November 15, 2017 After Sunday’s heartbreaking loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there were rumblings that New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles should bench starting quarterback Josh McCown for Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg. Bowles made the right move in sticking with McCown. He’s made it clear that the only way he makes a quarterback change is if McCown suffers an injury. Coming into the season, the Jets were expected to go winless or at best, manage two wins. McCown, although not perfect, has already led the team to four wins. If not for a second half collapse against the Miami Dolphins, and a questionable TD reversal against the New England Patriots, the Jets could be a 6-4 team and in the hunt for the wild card. The Jets know what they have in Petty. In 2016, Petty started six games and was awful. The Jets were 1-5 in his starts and Petty completed 56% of his passes and threw three touchdowns and seven interceptions. Hackenberg has never played in a regular season game for the Jets and that right there gives you all the information you need. Hackenberg was a huge reach for the Jets in the second round of the NFL Draft. He will most likely never see the field in a Jet uniform. Let’s face it, Petty and Hackenberg are practice squad quarterbacks at best. Bringing them in could signal to players that Bowles believes the season is over. McCown gives the Jets the best option to win and wins mean Bowles keeps his job.
