Football Jets Minicamp Notes: Marshall Looks Solid, Quarterbacks With Mixed Results Brandon Marshall has been exactly what the Jets were expecting. by Staff Post June 12, 2015 Geno Smith (Photo by Rich Schultz /Getty Images) Through two days of the Jets summer minicamp, there is a lot of news and controversies surrounding the team. The biggest concern through the first two days is not the Twitter war between Antonio Cromartie and Kellen Winslow; rather it surrounds the quarterback competition. On the first day of minicamp, Geno Smith was horrible. He threw three interceptions and two of them were in the red zone. This is clearly a huge problem since Smith is expected to be the starting quarterback week 1. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty weren’t fantastic either, contributing an interception each. So is this bad quarterback play something to worry about? Not right now it’s not. Smith had a turnaround day on Wednesday, not turning the ball over a single time. And keep in mind that Smith has a completely new offense to learn with Todd Bowles as the new head coach. And on top of that, Smith is competing against what will be one of the best defenses in the NFL. Smith clearly has a long way to go before the season starts, but maybe a new voice as a head coach, some legitimate threats at wide receiver, and playing against a tough defense in practice will bring the best out of him this year. Other than the quarterback competition, one of the main storylines of minicamp thus far is Brandon Marshall. Apparently, Marshall has been exactly what the Jets were expecting. A big body receiver that can go up and get jump balls. He even made one incredible leaping catch over cornerback, Darrin Walls. I know Darrin Walls isn’t exactly the best cornerback in the world, but it is very important that Brandon Marshall is the pro-bowl receiver that the Jets want him to be, especially since Eric Decker dealt with a hamstring injury last season which always has the chance to be a reoccurring injury. Brandon Marshall has to be the major receiver that the Chicago Bears have seen in recent years if the Jets want to be competitive and the fact that he is doing well in minicamp is a satisfying step.
