Baseball Jordan Humphreys honored with the Columbia Fireflies 2017 Sterling Award The young pitcher has been a big bright spot for the organization with the most shadows over it by Daniel Yanofsky September 30, 2017 While the Mets in the majors are struggling to make it past the finish line, the minor league affiliates of the club are feeling the love. It was stated in a press release that the Mets honored RHP Jordan Humphreys of the Columbia Fireflies with the Fireflies’ 2017 Sterling Award. The award goes to the MVP at each minor league level. Humphreys was honored at Citi Field this past week, taking a tour of the field he could potentially be a part of while watching the big boys play later on. A dream come true like that could motivate him even more to be the best. The Mets drafted Jordan Humphreys out of high school in the 18th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft. After that, the young pitcher immediately made an impact. Manager Jose Leger predicted early on the kid would have a bright future. According to the release, Leger stated: “He has great command of all of his pitches. He’s able to locate the fastball up, down, in and off the plate. He sets up the hitters and if you’re able to do that with the fastball, it just makes your off-speed better. He has good, smooth mechanics that help his velocity. He looks like he just jumps at you when he throws.“ It was a dominant season for Humphreys, who won ten games in eleven starts for the Fireflies, boasting a 1.42 ERA to top it all off. That’s not all. In 69.2 innings, the 21-year old struck out 80 batters while walking only nine. With that type of talent, it would make sense how opponents only batted .168 against him. How he attempts to advance after a season to remember will be interesting. All eyes will be on the Fireflies, and it looks like the pressure is fine by him. Next season, Jordan Humphreys looks to take the next major step in his career. Due to all of the relief talent the Mets have, it looks like Humphreys will have some competition.
