Baseball Jordan Montgomery and Dietrich Enns Remain Focused on the Mound by Staff Post May 8, 2016 MiLB On Sunday afternoon in Trenton, Trenton Thunder pitchers Jordan Montgomery and Dietrich Enns sat next to each other in the home clubhouse after their morning workouts. Between the two of them sat a 7-1 pitching record. Montgomery is 4-0 with a 2.67 ERA and Enns sits at 3-1 with a 1.26 ERA. Enns, 24, was named the April player of the month for the Eastern League after throwing 23.2 innings without allowing a run and giving up just nine hits. “I really try and go out there and execute my pitches to the best of my ability,” Enns said. “I just try and keep our team in the ballgame.” Enns has done just that and more and currently sits atop the Eastern League leaderboard in earned run average. The 6-foot-1 lefty has stuck with the same approach so far this season. “Just get ahead,” Enns said. “Just getting ahead makes life a lot easier on a pitcher in general. Getting ahead and trying to get quick outs has been the biggest thing for me.” Montgomery has also been a key force in the Thunder rotation. As the No. 20 prospect in the Yankees organization, Montgomery has lived up to his ranking and more. The 23-year currently sits tied for second in wins among the Eastern League leaderboard, but does not hesitate to credit his teammates. “The key for me has been the hitters and my catcher,” Montgomery said. “Run support has really helped me. It is easy to pitch when you’re up 3-0 so I have been blessed with hitters seeing the ball so well.” Montgomery has only given up eight earned runs in 27 innings so far in 2016. “I really just try and fill the zone up and eliminate walks,” Montgomery said. “I want to get as many ground balls and strikeouts as I can.” Even with the fast starts of Montgomery and Enns both pitchers continue to remain focused. “It’s easy to pick out the things I am doing wrong,” Montgomery said. “I just really have to focus on those things and get better every start.” “Each start has been something to build off of and it is important to keep the momentum going,” Enns said. “It’s important to keep the good results coming and to keep executing.” As Montgomery and Enns continue to impress, Thunder and Yankees fans alike continue to notice.
