Knicks improve to 5-4 behind Porzingis’ 40 points

Carmelo Anthony parted ways with the Knicks at the end of the off season. His absence essentially ushered in a new era for New York. Kristaps Porzingis, who had two solid years in the league, took the reigns of the Knicks. While many assumed the Knicks would merely tank, Porzingis was off plotting how to keep his team in contention. His 40-point game demonstrates that maybe he found an answer.

Porzingis Against the Pacers

On Sunday night Kristaps Porzingis dropped 40 points against the Indiana Pacers. As if that weren’t enough he also added eight rebounds and six of New York’s seven tremendous blocks. Not to mention he shot an incredible 62.5% from the field. On the brink of defeat, Porzingis rallied his team behind his great play and successfully led them to a 108-101 victory. Of course he had some great help. Enes Kanter grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds while Frank Ntilikina led the way for the Knicks in the assist department with seven. Ntilikina also added ten points while Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 16. No doubt his teammates showed up, but simply put Porzingis owned this game.

Big Picture

This performance follows Porzingis stating that he thinks he may be the best player ever some day. At the very least he’s putting his money where his mouth is. Porzingis has showed up for the Knicks time and time again this season. He has been instrumental in their record improvement starting off the season at 0-3 improving to 5-4. The young Latvian has delivered a slew of 30+ point games with a good number of blocks and rebounds. He has now helped his team tie in the east with the Washington Wizards, Toronto Raptors, and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Moving Forward

At the moment the Knicks sit at the 7th seed in the East and clearly want to improve. Standing behind Kristaps Porzingis, who is now averaging 29 points and just under 8 rebounds a game, they may do just that. The Knicks host the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night. Without a doubt they want to continue to ride the wave that their star big man has given them.
